Children in Crisis
In the Khabarovsk Krai region, there are 37 orphanages and children's homes which house about three thousand children. Of the 3,000 children 95%, social orphans whose parents have given them away. In the Khabarovsk Krai region as well as across all Russia, it is very difficult to find homes for all fo the children. Even though the number of new orphaned children is decreasing in Russia, the problem of homelessness children has become greater. Within the Russian Federation there are about 800,000-orphaned children, from which more than 3000 are in the Khabarovsk Krai region
To better understand the living conditions of Russia’s orphans the following statistics need to be examined.
Orphanages lack the funds to buy the most basic needs--medical supplies, adequate food, nutritional supplements (fruits and vegetables are almost non-existent for many months), footwear and winter clothing.
Many children do not have the basic clothing and footwear essentials to enter public school. Orphans are seldom provided with the basic educational tools and often do poorly from the lack of parental support.
- Medical and dental care for orphans is almost non-existent
- Abuse is a common occurrence in the orphanages, often by older kids.
- Many of the workers at the orphanages are paid very little, and they often go for weeks without pay
- At age 16 children must leave the orphanage with little formal education, very limited life skills and no one to turn to for help.
- Many of the children start smoking around the age of 12 or 13 (cigarettes are 4 packs for $1)
The average life expectancy of an orphan is just 30 years
According to a Human Rights Watch Report entitled Abandoned to the State, of the more than 15,000 children who leave orphanages each year;

Over 50% will be involved in prostitution, or crime
30% are addicted to drugs or alcohol.
