Oleg's Story

I dream mommy will find me!

I hope mommy will hear

I hope a mommy will come,

I dream mommy will find me!

I hope it is not possible in this world

For children to be lost.

The words of this great children’s song always makes me cry. Perhaps, too often, I talk to orphan children who dream about a mom and dad, waiting for them, seeking them and they do not come and… do not come. That's what happened to Oleg, who is a Ukrainian ten year old boy. He is dreaming about finding a mom and dad as his own family.

Oleg suddenly came to us a week ago and in a matter of urgency, an SOS signal from the family that sponsored him here in America. One of my Russian school parents gave them our phone number because they knew I speak Russian and Ukrainian.

The boy came from the Ukraine through a five week summer program from an adoption agency for orphan children to see America and have a rest and maybe find a family. But it looks like for Oleg for now it is only a dream. The sponsoring American Family enthusiastically spent the first few days with him but could not adapt to the child because of difficulties with the language barrier.

The first day in our family the boy looked like a disheveled, ruffled up sparrow, but a day later Oleg mastered, thawed and turned into a wonderful, obedient boy. He loves cars.  Yesterday we bought him a remote control truck and a car carrier gifts and his happiness knew no bounds.  He and Veronica (they became the best friends) "flew" around the house with the cars. The Big truck is the dad and the smaller was the mother and small cars (about 30) were their children. They had such a large and happy family. In the evening he fell asleep embraced with his gifts.  He is a wonderful ordinary boy! He loves to swim. He dreams to be a taxi driver. He loves flowers and strawberries. He likes Gummy Bears and noodles.

During the week or so that Oleg has been with us we visited the local aquatic park with a swimming pool. At a County Fair he enjoyed the swings, roundabouts and slides. Oleg did not want to wash a painted spider from his face (he got painted it at the fair for free) because he liked him so much. We were inside a huge dinosaur and touched his heart.  It looked like he was breathing, and then, with a laugh, we went out under his tail in the form of ... well you know what
J. The tour was informative and funny.  We ate “Elephant Ears”, a very popular confection in America. It is a tasty fried tortilla with a choice of toppings like chocolate, apples, strawberries and syrup. Oleg did not want to buy them because he genuinely thought we were really going to eat elephant ears.  But when he tried them, he really liked them.

Here are the pictures of our wonderful boy. He is really very calm and friendly.   He is very thin like many children from the orphanage, but he is very nice.Soon he will go back to the Ukraine so we have a few days to spare. Maybe you know of a good family who dreams about a son.  Please show them our "foundling" (as I affectionately called him to myself).  Who knows, perhaps a miracle will happen and another child will find a mom and dad.

 Thank you.

Oleg went to Ukraine, but we have hope for a bright future

... and a lot of work

 August 29, 2011

Well, we were sad to say Good bye to "our" Oleg.  He is back in the Ukraine now. On the way to the airport he asked a thousand questions. What I really like about this child is his curiosity. He inquired about what each sign on the road means and it was a little test for me also. Then he asked grandfather Randy, what the name of restaurant was, and how it got the name.

Veronica, our granddaughter went with us, but immediately warned us that she would cry, because she fell in love with her new friend Oleg.  She faithfully fulfilled her promise on the way back home.  There was no end to her tears. Only after we solemnly assured her that we will start to work on documents to bring him back, Veronica calmed down a bit.  But to this day, every day she is interested in how our work is progressing. We, as grandparents, are responsible. We are working very hard. We really are working now on the documents (oh, it's hard work), but it gives a very good and large positive in our lives now. Randy laughs: "As you know we always find more work for ourselves."

I go back to the trip to the Detroit airport. On our way we stopped at a restaurant and ordered Oleg the biggest hamburger on the menu. He ate it with pleasure, much to our surprise. The hamburger was a triple layer.  Then we found a replica of the Statue of Liberty in the restaurant, with ... what do you think was in her hand instead of a torch - the same hamburger. We took pictures of both children next to the lady lover of hamburgers. Veronica and Oleg were very happy. Hanging from the ceiling was a large airplane and Oleg jumped trying to get it, but the plane was too high and stayed there. There were very many interesting pictures, but the time to play was over and we continued our way.

Now, on the road, Oleg felt sad and in a quiet voice asked, "Grandma, am I going away forever?" "No - I said: you must come back, baby! Because we love you very much, our friends and family love you and Veronica considers you consider her brother. You're sure to come back. "What a joy brightened his eyes.

Lord, help us, just ask and it shall be given to you.

At the airport we could not find our Ukrainian team with the other departing children. Finally, they were found at the end of the hall. All in green identical T-shirts (apparently, not to be lost - which is very reasonable). Oleg until the last minute did not want to put on his shirt, but the whole team should be in a green shirt and he had to. The guys were hushed and happy at the same time, apparently to meet with each other and from the sad fact that we must part from their sponsors (good Americans and their families). Someone spent more time in the family, someone on the road, but all was fun and comfortable, interesting and informative, I am very pleased.

Finally came the last minute and tears of separation.  We took the last pictures and hope in the eyes of Oleg that we will see him soon.

Oleg stayed with us with the hope on the fact that "it does not happen in the world, that here are lost children", the hope that a mom and dad find Oleg.

For all of us now have a lot of work. For us it is difficult but a solvable problem to bring the dream and hope of a child in real life.

The next time I'll show you the young family, who told us: "Yes, it's our baby." I will tell you a little secret right now, they have twins: a girl and boy, they are only a year old.

With God all things are possible. Please, all who read it pray for us and our work on documents and for all those who help us and for Oleg.

The story continues as we complete and await the answers from Ukraine officials.
